One of the subtleties involved in the beauty of the kitchen cabinet and panel furniture industry is the issue of covering the cut edge of MDF panels. To solve this problem, edge banding is used. Edge banding, in short, is the process of preparing the MDF sheet, gluing the tape to the work, and cleaning after the operation.
Types of MDF glued edges
In addition to adding to the beauty of the work, the edge banding operation increases the resistance of the work to heat, moisture and impact; in this way, a strip made of PVC, wood veneer, wood strip, ABS and melamine strip is glued to the work surface. The usual thickness of the edge bands for the edge banding process is 0.4, 1, 2 and 3 mm. Edge banding machines are of different types; in general, these devices can be divided into two models: portable and fixed, which are explained in detail below. The main difference between fixed and portable edge banding is that in portable edge banding, the glue sticks to the surface of the strip, while in fixed edge banding, the surface of the work is impregnated with glue.
Introduction to portable edge banding machines
Portable edge banders are usually used for smaller jobs and workshop use. These devices are divided into two categories, iron-on and PVC, depending on the type of tape they use. The way they work is explained in full below.
Portable iron-on adhesive edge
This machine uses iron-on tapes (with adhesive backing) for edge gluing. The way this machine works is that the machine heats the adhesive on the back of the tape with a hot air dryer and then you can start gluing the edge manually. Then, after finishing the gluing, you can manually cut off the top and bottom of the tape and remove the excess tape with a tape scraper. This portable edge gluing machine model is used for tapes with a thickness of 0.4 mm.
PVC portable adhesive edge
This edge banding model has a granulated glue tank; the glue is heated and melted in the tank, then when it comes out, the PVC tape is soaked in the glue and sticks to the edge of the work. After the edge banding is finished, the ends and ends of the tape can be cut manually with a head and bottom cutter and the top and bottom excesses of the work can be cut with a manual overcutter. This machine is nominally suitable for working with PVC tapes with a thickness of 1 and 2 mm.
Introduction to fixed adhesive edge
Fixed edge banding machines are used for edge banding work on larger scales such as medium and large workshops and factories. This model of edge banding machine is suitable for a variety of edge thicknesses from 0.4 to 3 mm. Depending on their model, industrial edge banding machines have 2 to 9 stations such as pre-milling, gluing station set, head and bottom saw, top and bottom milling, corner sawing, etc. Sometimes in the wood industry it is said that the edge banding machine has 10 or 12 stations, if the number of stations does not increase; for example, a two-motor corner sawing station is considered two stations instead of one station, or some custom-made features are considered as stations.
